Hi, i have decided to get a wireless network. As a laptop on the network will be used for online gaming and wants to remain wired for this, my question is this ... is it possible for this laptop to be both wired and wireless when need be? The cable/dsl router im thinking about is 90Mbps when wired is this sufficient for online gaming(the user just participates i think). The Ntl connection is 512k at the moment but may be upgraded to 2Mb, does this mean that the router is more than capable of handling the 2mb connection speed? Also can anyone reccomend what cable i will need from first the modem to router and then the router to the laptop for a wired connection, the modem (from ntl top box to small blue modem) has both a usb and ethernet socket as does the laptop. Many Thanks Haydn

1."Hi, i have decided to get a wireless network. As a laptop on the network will be used for online gaming and wants to remain wired for this, my question is this ... is it possible for this laptop to be both wired and wireless when need be? "

1.You can have both Wireless and Wired Network Adapters in the Laptop computer instlled, configured and either used as needed.
2."The cable/dsl router im thinking about is 90Mbps when wired is this sufficient for online gaming(the user just participates i think). The Ntl connection is 512k at the moment but may be upgraded to 2Mb, does this mean that the router is more than capable of handling the 2mb connection speed?"

2.I hope someone with better knowledge and expertise about network gaming would jump in to guide or expand my suggestion to use a Gaming router.[Example: <a class="textReg" href="http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=371"> GamerLounge Broadband Gigabit Gaming Router

3."Also can anyone reccomend what cable i will need from first the modem to router and then the router to the laptop for a wired connection, the modem (from ntl top box to small blue modem) has both a usb and ethernet socket as does the laptop"
3. For both Cable/DSL modem to Wired Router and from Router to any of the Computers in the Wired LAN,you need only Straight-through Ethernet cables. Don't get Cross-Over Cable.
Hope this helps.

Think about it.

Gigabit gaming router to 512K link? So that means great performance between lan pcs but to the internet? NOT

Laptops are crap for gaming imho.
Go wired not wireless for gaming.

You can do both wired and wireless but not at the same time from the laptop. MS will default to one or the other which is good since the potencial for a loop being created is there. This is what spanning tree prevents but there is no spanning tree protocol on most soho routers.

You will get cables with the router and the instructions will tell you which to use.

router will handle whatever the bandwidth is on the wan port being provided.
