Alright, this is my first post ever, so please bear with me.

First off, the country where I live has dsl/isdn/cable, but at such outrageous cost that only private corporations and government-affiliated departments/assets can afford it.

That said, I can't afford dsl/isdn/cable. So I'm forced to rely on dialup.

Okay, so here is what I want to do. I want to network all the desktops and laptops in my house to be able surf the 'Net through my dialup-computer.

My equipment:

The machine I'm using now (the dialup computer)

1 Compaq Presario laptop w/ WinXP with wireless capability

1 Hewlett Packard laptop w/ Vista with wireless capability

1 Linksys Wireless Access point router w/ 4 port switch (Has ports 1-4, a WAN port, and Uplink port)

Here is what I've done so far:

The dialup computer has a straight-thru network cable running to port 1 of the wireless router. I've already configured the dialup computer for internet connection sharing.

The wireless router is on and running :P.

On both of the laptops, they are able to be connected to my wireless network (such as it is) and they can detect the internet sharing in the dialup computer.

The problem is when I try to use the 2 laptops to surf the 'Net, they can't do it at all.

I'm probably lacking some of the needed details so if you guys need 'em just holler :P

DYW you did a good job figuring this out. You are wired correctly so the router is just acting like a Access Point.

Since you don't say specifically what didn't work, I would suspect a common problem.

Both sides of the host are in the same subnets. In other words both have 192.168.1.x for example. You want one as such 192.168.1.x and the other to be 192.168.0.x

It would really be helpful if you posted a ipconfig /all from the internet connection sharing host pc.

Example of Oxymoron:

Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion.

Abstinence training clearly isn't working.

itguru, wanderer and jefro thanks for the replies and suggestions. Unfortunately I'm at my sister's house so I won't have a chance to test out your suggestions until tomorrow nite or something.

Here's to hoping! :P Will post whatever happens!

And I'm back!

Was a bit busy the past few days so I couldn't work on the wireless router but here goes....

Itguru, sorry man, but when I tried your suggestion, my dialup-pc lan connection became disconnected. So it didn't work unfortunately.

Wanderer, by using your suggestion with the ipconfig command I found out that when I connected the dialup pc to the router, I couldn't access it via the html-setup. So I did a little tinkering and found out that I had to change my ip to 192.168.1.3 on the dialup pc (whereas my router was the standard 192.168.1.1).

Jefro, your link came in handy also by explaining ICS in detail and a few things about its configuration that I had to change in order for the laptops to detect the ICS connection in the dialup pc.

First problem solved. I could now setup the router and configure it.

Now back to the original problem, the laptops being unable to access the internet through the dialup pc.

I reset the settings for ICS on the dialup pc, and then started poking around on the compaq laptop. Using the Network Setup Wizard, I set the network settings on the compag to "This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway..."

After that, I set the wireless adapter ip on the compaq to 192.168.1.4, and by a few minutes of trial and error, I figured out that I had to set the default gateway and preferred dns server to my dialup pc, which was of course 192.168.1.3.

After that, I had to enable Unpnp Forwarding on the router and change a few things on the configuration of the wireless adapter on the compag. With that done, I had success! I was able to surf the Internet through the Compag laptop.

With the Ibm thinkpad, I just followed the same things I did on the Compag, albeit with a few alterations and that was that!

Thanks a lot guys and I appreciate your help.
