Hi

OK - here goes with today's stupid question. I've just purchased a NETGEAR wireless router, hoping to set up a simple wireless setup to share one DSL connection. Of course, stupidly, I didn't find out enough about these things before purchasing, and now I've discovered that the DSL modem needs to have an Ethernet socket to connect to the router. My British Telecom Broadband DSL modem connects via USB, and does not have an Ethernet connection.

Basically, can somebody very kind tell me if I have to give up, or whether there is some other way I could use the router to connect into a main computer which has the internet connection, and so do a kind of wireless network connection where other wireless enabled computers connect to the first machine, rather than directly into the DSL modem connection. Or is that another piece of gear I need?

When I link up as follows....

DSL MODEM
:
:(usb)
:
MAIN PC
:
:(ethernet)
:
NETGEAR WIRELESS ROUTER

The router's internet light (showing an internet connection has been found) lights up. BUT no other computer can connect to the NETGEAR wireless network that is available. I ask a second laptop to connect to it, and it just thinks about it, then does nothing.

Sorry for this majorly garbled message, but I'm doing my head in and would REALLY appreciate any help. Ideally help suitable for a 3 year old.

Thanks a million

Jeremy

they make usb to rj45 converters. look at your local electronics shop or online.

personally I would return the router and get the correct one.

Exchange it for a wireless router with USB and ethernet hookups. You may be forced to get a non wireless one, and get a separate wireless access point.

You could go with your setup as well. You will need to find a crossover cable to connect your PC to the router's WAN or uplink port. Then set the PC up to share the internet connection. I would only suggest this as a temporary solution until you follow some of the above suggestions, because you will need to have the main PC on whenever you wish to use the internet. Your best bet is to exchange the router for one that accepts USB.

Thanks for all your help. Have had a look for a USB-Ethernet converter and have found what I need I think.

Brian - thanks for your advice. I have connected the main PC to the routers uplink socket with a crossover as you suggested. The router has an I light on to show the internet is "getting through" to it. But the wireless laptop still doesn't connect to the NETGEAR network which is offered in the available wireless networks window.

I click Connect, and it thinks about it for a minute (it says "Please wait while Windows connects to the NETGEAR wireless network") and then doesn't connect and just leaves me with the same screen without explanation.

I don't know if you can shed any light on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks, take care

Jeremy
