I found that when the phone base was in the same room as the router that I would lose my connection to the internet. Once I moved the router to a different room, the problem stopped. The handset didn't seem to matter with reception.

Well, move the router around does not help at all. Since both router and phone have many available channel, what you should do is playing round with those channel to see if it does any better. I guess each channel around 20-30hz dif so it may reduce the interference. But the best advice is replace your phone with an 5.8Ghz and that will total reduce your problem. But remember that some other people experienced the interference with the Microwave too.

I had the same problem. I was able to improve things a little by moving the router and phones around, but the only real solution came when I purchased a new 5.8 ghz cordless phone.

Your options are:

Buy 5.8GHz phone.
Buy older, but cheaper 900Mhz phone.
Replace router with 802.11A (5.8Ghz)Router.
Buy directional antennas for router and card.
Change to wired network.
