I work in a company that has IT contracted out to another firm. Neither I nor anyone in my department had/has any influence in changing things regarding that contract. They put a secure network in so we can't add a computer or printer without them detecting it and removing it. We have to pay exhorbitant fees out of our own budget for a new device or to install another app(on top of the manuf software licensing fee).
This doesn't go over well with many of us as our previous licenses are no longer valid and many of the apps were very useful and no one wants to approve re-licensing them on our new system(lots of red-tape and very expensive). Some of us managed to hold on to our old computers without getting them wiped, but getting access to printers is very cumbersome involving file format conversions and shuffling them along with thumb drives. If I got a wireless usb print server and put it on one of the printers would the print server show up on the rest of the wired ethernet network tree or just if someone detected the wireless. I'm just tired of going through so many hoops to print a drawing big enough to read.

I know it probably goes against your IT "code of honor" ;) to assist in circumventing a colleague but not all IT guys are created equal and the ones I've encountered in this job have attitudes ranging from poor to unprofessional, we avoid using them as much as possible. However, I'll do them the courtesy of not naming them in a public IT forum. I'll be glad when the contract expires.
