Hi,

I'm setting up a home wireless network for just my apartment at school. The entire radius of use at and around my place isn't bigger than 20' or so at most. Any recommendation on how to set the following values?

Beacon interval (default 100)
RTS threshold (default 2432)
Fragmentation (default 2346)
DTIM interval (default 3)
Basic rates (default 1-2Mbps; current setting 1-2-5.5-11Mbps)
TX rates (default 1-2-5.5-11Mbps)
Preamble type (default long; current short)
Authentication (Default auto; current open)
SSID broadcast (default enabled)
Antenna transmit power (default 100%; current 25% and more than enough).

I seemed to be having some trouble staying connected at first, but after changing preamble type and authentication it seemed to work better. Also, I turned Norton IS off because it seemed to be interfering w/ my ability to use AIM.

Any sugg is welcome, thanks!

Lynn

What wireless transmitter are you using...

I have set up a number of Linksys wireless routers and access points and have always used the "default" settings and everything has worked correctly...

So, what hardware are you using???

You can try a firmware update, but only do it from a wired connection to your router. I have a linksys, used the default settings, and had a similar issue. After a firmware update, i have never dropped my connection.

I suggest changing you SSID, and enable the WEP or MAC address filter. Other wise your neighbors will have free internet at your expense.

Hm, after a few days of "warmup" it seems to work better now. Pretty odd. Anyway, it's a D-Link, an old model - the DI-514? It only handles 'b' (11Mbps) and not 'g', but I got it cheap :P

And yeah, I have WEP up. Thanks for the tips!
