I have a wireless network at home with 2 computers...1 desktop and 1 labtop. The desktop is hardwired into the router through a lan card where the labtop is connected through wireless. Now if I wanted to setup peer to peer network for file sharing can the wireless adapter on the labtop communicate with the LAN card on the desktop? Does the desktop need a wireless card in it as well? I know on the wireless adapter you need Ad Hoc enabled...is this true. Any suggestions would help

You have everything already set to share files/printer between the two. No additional hardware is required. PCs can communicate between themselves since they have a device in common: the wireless router.
Start the networking wizard and follow the prompts.

ad hoc = no access points
infrastructure = access points.
You have an access point. Therefore, infrastructure.

OK seems you are missing the point.
Because of the router, you can connect a pc that is doing wireless to a pc that is using a patch cable to the router.
Don't confuse HOW they connect with file and print sharing. One is using a wired connection and one is using a wireless connection but they both go to the same switch in the router.
You need to leave your working wireless connection as it is. You don't have to change anything with your present hardware configuration to be able to network the two pcs together and share file and print services.
