Comment: While trying to set up a network on my second computer I have what seems to be more than one problem. 1st, my main computer is USB to my network connection which is DSL 2Wire which I was told is wireless capable. My 2nd PC is WIN 98SE Professional. I purchased a Dynex wireless net card and installed it in the Win98 PC. I seem to get to the 2wire net because when I request IP automatically, I get one assigned by the network. When I try to connect to the internet, I get the page not found/unable to display page message. I also show no signal strength and my 2nd PC is about 30 ft from the 1st PC?? Gdoug

Reply: (edit)Usual issue is that your provider is only giving you one ip as in one internet access. This is why most folks put in a soho router so they can take that one access and feed it to many pcs. You might want to do a ipconfig [winipcfg on the 98 box] on both and note the ip address. Is it in the same subnet? Are they the same ip on both? If you are trying to network the two pcs together you can't with that equipment unless it puts the usb and wireless on the same lan. I never have seen a device that does that. Usually you connect to the internet with one pc either via usb or wireless but never both at the same time. I suspect a wireless router with a usb wan interface is what will give you what you want in the way of networking the pcs and having both on the internet. Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Reply: (edit)Here is the PDF file for my 2wire router. http://www.2wire.com/pages/pdfs/100... It is described to be both direct connect and if installing additionall computers, wireless is an option. The service provider is SWBell and their tech said it was wireless and that I could do what I am trying to do. They were not much help when I ran into problems though. The 2wire gives me an abundance of IP's to choose from, and I have verified that they are not the same IP but that the default GW was the same and subnet mask was the same. Gdoug

Reply: (edit)The router looks pretty standard. When you looked at the ips did you write them down? Are they 192.168.x.y? with x being in common between the two and y not being the same? Can you ping between pcs? Can you from the 98 pc access the 2wire web interface? Wireless signal can be stopped by walls and dense objects. For testing purposes you should move it to the same room as the 2wire. Get everything working and then we can work on improving the signal. Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Reply: (edit)The IPs are as you said and within the range provided by my ISP. I had already moved the wireless to within 15 ft of the 2wire and still no luck. I'll try the same room routine tonight and see how that works. When on the XP PC I have the option to view the 2wire (I don't remember how I got to it without being in front of the PC) and see all PCs that are on the network. Once I get the automatic IP this next time, I will try that out to see if the wireless is in the list. I havent been able to get any website at all on the wireless PC. Gdoug

Reply: (edit)The ips you get on the pcs don't come from your ISP. They come from your router. Your ISP provides the ip to the wan interface of the router. To access the routers web interface all you have to do is put the gateway address into IE or firefox. You should get a web page asking for account and password. Start simple with the wireless. No encryption, broadcast ssid. You want a connection THEN we can tighten up security. First steps first. Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

Reply: (edit)Ok, My connection on my wireless PC says that the signal is at 100%. When I go to my Direct connected PC I can view the local network and the wireless is not there. There are numerous settings for the wirless network on the local network page such as a network name and an access point: Wireless Settings Network Name: 2WIRE368 Access Point: 00:0d:72:1b:f4:01 Then there is the "Edit Settings" button. In this area I can "Identify Network" which is 2WIRE###, and I can enable/disable Encription, and I can enable/disable SSID Broadcast??? whatever that is. When i get on the wireless PC I still get the Page cannot be displayed when trying to reach the internet. I see the light on the Wireless card flashing while I am trying to connect to the internet. Any more suggestions? Thanks. Oh, and there are also firewall settings if that can inhibit connections to the wireless network. Gdoug

Reply: (edit)Eureka! I can now see both networks listed on the home portal of the 2wire network. This is a hugh breakthrough. I messed with the firewall settings and disabled a lot of firewall stuff in the network area and "got network" Ok, now i still cannot get to the internet from the wireless PC. Would this be a firewall issue? Or would it be a internet options setting issue? Gdoug
