Comment: I have a desktop with a Ethernet PCI card, and a Dell Inspiron 9100 Laptop with a wireless card that I am trying to wirelessly netwrok using a Linksys WRT54G Router. Do I need a wireless card for my desktop as well for file and printer sharing to work? I don't really need the internet connection shared. I have tried everything I know (which isn't much) but it hasn't worked. Please help. Thanks, cs2004

Reply: (edit)All you should need to hook up your desktop to the wireless router is a CAT5e crossover cable and connect one end to the router and then the other end to the ethernet card on the PC. Then run the network setup wizard on the Desktop PC and then run the setup wizard on the laptop. You should be good to go.

Reply: (edit)Dave02, are you sure that should be a crossover cable? I would have thought it should be a straight through patch cable.

Reply: (edit)Yea. It needs to be a crossover cable. They are on dial up. The computer that connects to the internet will be the HOST. You will need a crossover cable to connect the HOST to the #1 port on the wireless router. Then they will have to make sure that DHCP is turned off in the router. The Host will be set up with ICS, so to the router it will look like a like device. Thus the need for the crossover cable.

Reply: (edit)I missed the dial up bit in the subject heading and thought they were connecting through the router to the Internet. My mistake. Thanks for the explanation Dave02.
