Hello,

I live in a house with 5 people connected wirelessly to our own secured wireless network.

Sometimes the network will not work. The computers will connect to the network but the internet will not work. This is intermittent. Sometimes the internet will work, sometimes it will not.

I have been told by the Router company that all my router settings are correct and tht something to do with DNS and Ip address is the problem. Not 100% sure though. I am not great with computers.

If i connect one of the computers to the router via ethernet or directly to the modem the internet works making me think it isnt an ISP problem.

Any help or pointers or needed information to aid me in solving this problem would be very much appreciated. The unreliability is very annoying.

Some comments..

1) Make sure all computers are set with correct IP, netmask or gateway information and can ping each others.

Using ping to troubleshoot network problem: http://www.home-network-help.com/tr...

2) Make sure all computers are set with workable DNS servers..

you can use nslookup to check the DNS operation: http://www.home-network-help.com/ns...

If you need free DNS, try openDNS (I'm using it..pretty good and fast): http://www.home-network-help.com/op...

4) Check your router settings, there should be a keep alive option that keeps the Internet connection always on. Enable it!!

Hope this helps.. :o)

Hey guys thanks for the comments.

1) I have pinged tried pinging my IP address of my computer and that doesnt work.

Pinging the loopback card address does work.

Pinging the router ip address also works.

2) I have changed my computer DNS server to the openDNS server. This didnt seem to make much difference. I also tried changingthis on the router settings. By changing the DNS to static. Is this correct.

3) I couldnt find an option in the router settings to keep the internet connection always on but when I rang the technical support for the router they said that everything in regards to router settings were ok.

Im am really rubbish with computers and not really sure what I am doing so any further help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Chris

It uses a wep key. The weird thing is sometimes the network works and sometimes it doesn't.

As you are using more than one computer in a network it could be the issue with ip address

Precisely the ip address of computer might be clashing with other

As you say it works fine when connected using one computer it makes me think this issue.

use can check and make sure every computer has got ip address and obviously are unique when your network is not working

use ipconfig command in command prompt to check ip adderess

Networkid
