Hi -
I recently set up my D-Link 514 Air Wireless Networking system. I isntalled both PCI Adapters and those went in well. They can both share internet now, and it is working fine. My problem is that neither computer can detect the other one. The one in the living room when I ask it to view the computers on the network says I don't have permissions. The one in my bedroom is only picking up it's self (it is plugged into one of the switches in the back of the wireless router). I called D-Link and then went through several steps to see if it's the PCI cards or the router itself that maybe the cause, but it isn't. Everything there is working fine. He said that it would be a problem in windows.
Now, I found out how to set permissions on Windows XP and did so. That didn't work either. I tried putting each computers unique IP address into the trusted zones of the intranet. That didn't work. I'm not sure what else I have to do to get these computers to see one another. It should have been automatic, but it's not. Is there like a HUGE step, I'm missing? I checked and I have all the appropriate networking and filesharing drivers needed. I even tried using the Home Networking Wizard through XP. That only messes up the internet connection so that it doesn't work at all. I tried to ping both computers...but all I get is that it "Timed" out.
I was hoping that I could go the "Wireless Route" but if that doesn't work, I'll have to hook each computer up by cables instead. I was hoping that this wouldn't be such a problem. I have a home business and also take care of my elderly grandmother. It's hard to hear her call for me while I'm working all the way in my room. It would be nice to work out in the living room and be close to her.
Any and all help is appreciated. If anyone can help, you can email me or I'm on ICQ 2830575.
Mel

Are you in the same workgroup or domain? Right click on My Computer go to Properties, that will bring up System Properites and see if both computers are in the same Domain or workgroup. Click on the change button.
Is the D-Link a router? If so, let the router assign the IP address to your computers.
For your computers take out any IP's, subnets, gateways just make sure you have DHCP enabled so that way the D-Link will assign your boxes with IP address and correct info. That should do it. Make sure your not running any firewall software until you get everything figured out first then you can turn it back on.

Hi-
Yes the D-Link is an Air Wirelss router. It's wirless but also has a switch on the back for 4 cable hookups. I'm on the same network (MS Home)Both computers are on the same network. I do not have a firewall up at all.
When I put in everything, it asked whether I wanted it to find it on it's own (IP's, Subnets, DHCP's) and it did that. Now when I do an "IPCONFIG" this is what I get for the living room computer
IP Address: 192.168.0.102
Sub Net Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
For the one in the bedroom, this is what I get:Eithernet:
IP: 169.254.242.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0Eithernet Adapter:
IP: 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1I'm starting to wonder, if the hook-up I have is correct to begin with. I have the dsl hooked into the wireless router. Then I have my computer nic card hooked into the 1st lan port on the back of the router. I tried it with no connection to the computer at all...and that did not work. Lost any connection to the internet. I thought that maybe having one in the switch port on the back was messing it up.
Now when I log into the network administration softwear, there is a log. Here is what the log says:
Recieve Transmit
WAN 15699 Packets 0 Packets
LAN 40398 Packets 33861 Packets
WIRELESS 19247 Packets 31216 PacketsMel

Also the error message I get when trying to view the computers on the network is this:
Mshome is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact administrator fo this server to find out if you have acess permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.
The computer in my room I don't get that message, and it just sees itself. Is it supposed to see itself to begin with?

Update:
Okay I successfully got the bedroom computer to see the living room computer. What I did is uninstall the softwear and took out the device drivers in the device manager. I restarted windows and let windows pick it up and then did the home networking set up and I specified the network. I then restarted the computer and clicked on view network computers. They all showed up instead of seeing itself. But now when I click on any of the folders it says I do not have permission!
I tried the same steps on the living room computer and it lost it's connection and no matter what I did it would not recognize the router or get an internet connection. I reinstalled the softwear which fixed that problem and then did the home networking wizzard, and picked my network. Nothing. When I clicked on view network computers I get the same message. So now I think it's just a permission issue. I probably could view the computers on the network on the living room computer if I had permission to.
Now, I was told to set permissions on XP you set up another account in the name of the other computer. If you didn't want a password, you didn't set one. I didn't. I did this on both computers. But still, no permissions! Is there some other way to set permissions for them to connect to each other?
Thanks!
Mel
