Hi,
I have a little problem that really does frustrate me very much concerning my AD HOC 802.11b wireless network. This network connects my desktop computer and two laptops; all beside each other not more than 3 meters apart. Both Laptops get Excellent signal strength but the Desktop gets LOW Signal altough it has a big antenna that is well connected and pointed towards the other laptops. Of course, transfer speed varies; both laptops can copy files at about 500 KB/s while the Desktop can hardly achieve 35 KB/s.

This problem is really annoying me. The Desktop doesn't get higher speeds even when either laptops is very close to its antenna. Signal Strength on the Destop is never excellent unless the two laptops aren't connected. All Cards are D-Link Air (2 PCMCIA + 1 PCI)

Please help me with this problem. It's really frustrating.

Joe

have you tryed moving the laptops away and seeing what happens? I have found that a position in which a computer should get excellent coverage dosnt mean is does. Being too close can be damaging to your signal...

Also is the pci card a good one? some of the cheapies can reduce speed...

still thinking.

The distance doesn't affect the speed. The speed and signal strength stay the same until they're about 80 meters apart.

About the chipset, I don't know but it's the same one (I guess on the laptops) .
Laptops DLink DWL-650
Desktop DLink DWL-520
as far as I remember

Thanks for your advice.

Joe

Get a Belkin FSD7000 for your desktop and be done with it. This card is $35, works with other wireless cards installed in the other computers on your network, and worked fine the first time I set it up. I have a 3 computer ad-hoc network, and this PCI card is excellent. Card also has great range.

May God bless everyone along the Gulf Coast trying to recover from Katrina. But let this be a lesson for America to turn back to God. We have forgotten Him by turning to drugs, sex, and other stuff.
