SUMMARY: Broadband internet connection via LAN/ADSL cable is OK, but when I setup my wireless network, receive message 'network cable not connected'.

1. My setup:

Two home laptops [Hi-Grade/ASUS AS7400 and AS8400] loaded with WinXP, connected to a BT broadband ADSL connection via wireless network [Network: Solwise SAR 703 router; 2 Zoomair wireless network 4100 PC cards; Zoomair IG 4165 Internet Gateway]

2. The problem.

a. Wireless network worked fine for 6 months until I decided to upgrade both laptops OS from WinME to WinXP. I then had problems re-establishing the broadband connection and wireless network.

b. Managed to get one laptop connected to the internet [this one!] using the Solwise SAR 703 router and LAN cable direct from back of SAR 703 router to the LAN socket on the laptop [ie. not using the Zoom IG4165 Wireless Gateway].

c. LAN cable ADSL connection is fine, but cannot get the wireless network going. Zoomair cards and Gateway seem fine, connection and signal strength good and Prism connection manager shows local connection profile available.

d. However, to connect via wireless I must remove the LAN cable from the rear of my laptop and connect it directly from the SAR 703 router to the WAN port on the Zoomair Gateway. As soon as I do this, the Local Area Connection icon in WinXP/Control Panel/Network Connections shows a red cross, and gives an error message 'network cable unplugged' - which is not surprising I suppose because I've disconnected the cable! - but I cannot get rid of it and therefore cannot establish the wireless network.

e. I'm stuck. The fix is probably simple but I cannot discover it. BT's connection via SAR 703 router is OK, and the Zoomair wireless network seems ready to go apart from this constant 'cable unplugged' message in WinXP.

f. Any ideas guys - your advice would be very welcome.

Try disabling the built-in NIC on the laptop to get rid of the "cable unplugged" message.
