The router for network is located on the second floor of the house. I live in a fairly small house, and I am only able to get wireless connection from the second floor.

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

I am using a Wireless-B LinkSys BEFW11S4. Is it the equipment itself?

Nothingn is normal when it comes to wi-fi, just whats possible. The construction of the building can play a major part in how well it works. Try moving the wireless router, sometimes a few feet can make all the difference.

You might try to place the wireless router on the first floor, then you should be able to get the wireless signal on first and second floor. I tested before and it worked, although the signal on second floor is not that strong.

Check this article on what you should take care of in order to get better wireless speed and signal.

Why My Wireless Network Speed is Slow

Hope helps..

When I'm setting up home wireless networks...I have developed the rule of
"3-1-50"...

That is...3 walls, 1 floor, 50 ft...the signal thru this should be 3 bars give or take...

Any more walls, floors or distance and the signal may be too weak to work effectively...
