Wireless Network Print Sharing

I have set up a wireless network between my laptop and desktop in my home. Everything works well except for one thing. My printer is connected to my desktop. If I don't have my desktop powered on, I cannot use certain applications (MS Word, Excel) but can use others (Adobe Acrobat). In Word or Excel, I get the "fatal error" message and a reference to my HP print driver. Thus, the only way I can use Word or Excel on my laptop, is if the desktop is powered even though I don't always need print capabilities. I could probably uninstall the printer on my laptop or disable the wireless connection but I also like to use the web connection. Is there a way to use Word or Excel on my laptop without powering my desktop? Thanks anyone.

It would be better if you can get a network appliance that supports a printer output. They aren't a lot more money than a regular home gateway product.
