DSL Modem, Linksys Router, Main Desktop Connected Via Cable, Secondary Desktop Connected Via Cable, Notebook PC Conected Via Wireless Signal

I had my wireless network crash about a week ago. I got everything all set back up, settings all reset (at first I could not connect wirelessly with my notebook figured it out though no thanks to Linksys).

Here is the deal from all PC's I can connect to the network and use the internet no problem. I can view all of the PC's on my network from all PC's, the problem is access between the PC's. There are no access problems between the Main Desktop and the Secondary Desktop and there are no access problems between the Notebok and the Secondary Desktop. I can not access the Main Desktop or the Notebook from the Secondary Desktop.

When I try to access the Notebook from the Main Desktop or the Main Desktop from the Notebook this is waht I get:

From Notebook:"WorkGroup" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access denied.

From Main Desktop:"WorkGroup" is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Your semaphore timeout session has expired.

I have also realized that this problem is also keeping my forwarded ports from actually being forwarded. It is also killing my conection speeds. If I am just downloading a regular file off a site I can no longer access web pages.

So what do you think. Any help would be great, ThanX.

Sounds like the xp firewall is on/not configured for the notebook & main to allow access.

This is LAN so "port forwarding" doesn't come into play. Port forwarding relates to coming thru the router from the internet.

If downloading a file causes the other pcs to not gain web access you very well may have a faulty router/isp issue.

Check your firewall on the 2nd Desktop PC to be sure it's disabled. If it is, get a new router. I guess another possibility would be that the culprit is the ethernet card in the 2nd Desktop PC. That's my opinion.

Keep us posted.

I have no firewall installed on any of the PC's and Windows' Firewall is disabled.

The router is not even 6 months old and I have updated the firmware recently.

My DSL modem has NAT security. The ports have been forwarded from there to the Router and from the router to my PC.

I just don't understand why I can access files on the Second PC from my Main PC and Notebook PC but I have no file access between the Main PC and the Notebook or From the Second PC.

If there is any other info that would help better find the problem please let me know. Thank You.

So you understand then that for you lan [pc to pc] the internet does not come into play.
Right?

Since you are running Home is the guest account enabled on all Home machines? There's a technet article that states for file sharing in home to work you need the guest account enabled.

Concerning your internet access and slow down, your " port forewarding" doesn't sound right. If you have a router after the router you may want to see if you can put your nat modem into bridge mode. This mode forwards everything not just "ports". Are you forwarding 0-1024[known ports] as well as the unknown ports up to 65,535?

TP, first you must have a share setup to share... That is, make sure you have a file a/o folder shared on each system.

Make sure the workgroup name is IDENTICAL for all systems.

Can all you ping the unaccessible systems?

As prev mentioned, port forwarding is not relevent to your LAN issue. Why/what are you port fwd'd on the adsl modem AND the Linksys router?? Also, you should definitely put your adsl router in bridge mode and allow your router to run the NAT.

what type of adsl modem are you using?

Well I just figured that since the internet problems happened at the same exact time that they may be from the same cause.

Again I have no firewalls. I will try disabling the NAT on the modem and see what that does. My modem is through Sprint it's a 645 something (sorry I am not @ home).

Sharring has been set up through the Network Wizard and folders have been set to share. They are all using the same IDENTICAL workgroup name.

Where and how can I do this. I think I did try something similar to this but I am not sure because I have tried so many things.

I still don't understand why just a 3 weeks ago I had no problems. My network was fine with how I set it up. The only thing that has changed is I have installed Windows Security updates since then.

I have a similar problem but I am nowhere near as fluent in computerese as these posts. I have the internet signal coming from the modem to a wireless router. From the wireless router I have a direct wire to a deskptop. I have a wireless laptop. Both can access the interest fine. I have used the Microsoft canned setup for both a wireless network and "home" network but I get the same message about no authorization. I have named them to the same workgroup. On the desktop it shows the laptop in the workgroup but error message no authoriation. On the laptop, it does not show the desktop. Is there somewhere with a step by step tutoral in language a few steps below this level?
thanks

The strange thing is that over in the Microsoft Newsgroups under Wireless Networking (where I have also posted my problem) many others are experiencing this same issue ar very close to it. It always comes down to the same thing them being asked about firewalls and even though they have them off or have turned them off none of the solutions are correcting the problem.

I thought at first it would be something small like it always is but I am starting to feel that this is more then it seems.

I think I am going to have to do a clean install if I cannot find a solution and just hope that helps.

Just awaiting further advice.

I had a similar problem with a wired pc & a wireless laptop. Setting up the ip address & subnet mask on both pc & laptop resulted in everything working (once the folders to share had been marked for sharing !), so I would recommend you stick with it !!
