wireless network disconnecting

My wireless network loses signal randomly. I have to unplug the router and plug it back in for it to work. Sometimes this doesn't even work, and I have to connect to it with a ethernet cable because the settings have changed(Such as it is Channel 6, SSID is now "Wireless" and the password is all 0's).
This mainly happens while downloading, but happens other times as well. It is not my computer problem, because all of my roommates lose connection at the same time as well. Is this a faulty router? How can I fix the problem?

1. Do you have any encryption set on your wireless router? e.g. WPA AES or TKIP. (Don't use WEP).
2. What about interference? Have you tried different channels? Use netstumbler to find a channel with the least interference.
3. Have you tried to upgrade the firmware on the wireless router? You can download the newest firmware by going to the router's manufacturer's web site.

I am currently using WEP, should I change this? I will also try different channels, will any work? I'm going to currently check the firmware as well, thanks for the suggestions.
