Has anyone had any problems with wireless networking and online gaming? Currently I'm running the Linksys WAP11 and the WUSB11. I get an excellent connection strength to a Windows XP box but get frequent interruptions while playing online games. Normal email and internet work great. Does anyone have a solution?

wireless has latency, and slow ping times. that is all there is to it.

Wireless Networks only introduces additional latency and slower ping times if you have what is called WEP (wired equivalent privacy) on. It's usually on by default. WEP is what keeps other people who have wireless networks close by out of your network. It does this thru encryption. So every time a packet is transported wireless, the AP has to encrypt and de-crypt packets as they are coming and going. Most wireless devices have an option to deactivate WEP. Once you have that you should get up to about 6 Mbs (little more, a little less), but definately more thru put than the DSL or cable modem at 1.5 Mbs. So it shouldn't "bottle neck" your connection speed. If you curious as to why 6 Mbs rather than the rated 11 Mbs wireless products confess to do, is that they do 11 Mbs, but the overhead reduces down to about 6 Mbs. Still better than 1.5 Mbs.

WEP is disabled and this is not the problem. I read a review of the Linksys router that quoted similar problems with gaming. Any other ideas?

Try looking around your house for anything that operates at 2.4 Ghz. That's the frequency that wireless uses (currently). I know I get screwed everytime my wife uses the cordless phone in the kitchen, which uses 2.4 Ghz. Also mircowaves, and pace makers.

Also check your wireless thru put. I use 3Com and it comes with a program meter so I can walk around the house judging signal strength. There may be some interfernce or distance that is causing your thru put to be in the "toilet". Might just be as simple as moving your AP to a more signal strength spot.

After that, I'd start looking at maybe something outside of the Wireless LAN being the problem. They just don't cause those kinds of "choke holds" on networking.

linksys products are great and very convenient. D is right about interferences. make sure you are far enough with the wireless phones as well as microwave ovens or any appliances that operates with 2.4 GHz take also the flourescent lamps. ok. have fun!

I have the same problem, but it's not just gaming, and I can tell you it is *ONLY A PROBLEM WITH WINDOWS XP*. I went back to 98 and it worked fine, games, everything. But in Windows XP it stalls every 25 or so seconds and often gets me disconnected from a game. Thank you.

Hi all! I use Cisco Wireless. I play Quake1, and Unreal Tournament. As it was explained to me by the Sysadmin at my ISP, who is a friend of mine, wireless is NOT TRUE ETHERNET. The packet handling, and conversion from wireless back to ethernet are causes of poor latency.
It's kinda like your packets are floating in a goo for a millisecond or ten...? Thats what it feels like to me... When I get on at the ISP (two T1's combined) with Quake OR Unreal Tourney, the response is IMMEDIATE! I can fire and move like I want to, and I can more easily distinguish between my actions and internet traffic congestion. I connect to my ISP via wireless from ONE block away,
I have EXCELLENT signal strength and quality...
Go figure...
