Subject: Wireless Network Advice PleaseOS: WIN XP PROCPU/Ram: 3ghz P4, 1GB RAM |
Comment: I want to set up a new wireless network between 4 computers all using Windows XP, to share broadband. I've decided to buy this modem/router from Netgear, it looks good and has good reviews. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=52244 Now I need to choose the wireless adapters. I presently use USB wireless adapters but they aren't properly compatible with windows XP and I don't like the USB interface so now i'm going for PCI (unless there is a good reason why I shouldn't). Could you guys suggest some good PCI adapters that, most importantly, work 100% with Windows XP! I have both a Netgear MA101 and a Linksys WUSB11 adapater which both said on the box were compatible with XP and both, after months of forums and support sites, it turns out are not( both have issues with the Wireless Zero Configuration Service). The router is 802.11g so if the adapters are this speed it would be an advantage. I've been looking at a number of adapters but I want to know what adapters you guys are using that difinatly work XP. Reply: (edit)I bought 2 Netgear WG511v2 PCMCIA cards a couple weeks ago and am very satisfied with them. Have used them on three different XP (with SP2) notebooks. Accessing the internet with my (Belkin) router (and cable modem) they seem as fast as my desktop's ethernet connection. Also using them in an adhoc network. I like and use the Netgear software that comes with them, and haven't even tried Window's WZC with them. Using "advanced" or WPA TKIP encryption with the router and WEP 128-bit with the adhoc. Haven't yet used them at distance greater than 20'. Terry
