I have a windows xp machine (client 1) connected by crossover to a wireless bridge (D-Link DWL-810 in ad-hoc mode with wep encryption; mac cloning on). Another wireless bridge (same model, same configuration) is connected by crossover to my router. There are also two other computers that connect directly to the router, one win98 (client 2), the other winxp PRO (client 3). The router is a netgear RP614 and performs NAT from the LAN to the WAN port. The inside network is 10.10.10.x; the outside network (192.168.0.x) is connected via crossover to yet another computer, this one running windows 98 se with winroute pro. The winroute computer has a dial-up modem which connects to the internet. On the two computers which are directly connected to the router, all internet access goes smoothly. All three client computers can perform windows file sharing and can ping each other. All three client computers can ping each other, the router's inside interface, and the router's outside interface. But only the two computers wired direvtly to the router can ping the NIC on the winroute machine. Only they can access the internet. It is very odd the TCP/IP works over the wireless bridge, and the NAT firewall, but not both. Also, the winroute machine uses NAT to protect the small network between its NIC and the router's wan port, so only the modem IP is public. Why might a ping fail after the outside interface on the router from over a wireless connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
