wireless internet interruptions

Specs: Windows Vista

I have a new HP Pavilion laptop which is experiencing random interruptions with an "excellent" rating on my wireless internet connection in my private home in Massachusetts. It keeps saying the connection is excellent, but, when I try to connect, it only lasts less than 1 minute then loses it. This lasts for 1-4 hours. There are also days where the connection is perfect all day.

It is not because of overheating. I have tested this.

I do have an ODD next door neighbor.
Could it be possible he is using a device to listen to me in my home and it is interrupting my internet connection?

Or is this a known problem with Verizon?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

When you created your wireless network, did you secure it using WPA encryption and a password on the SSID?

If not, then it could very well be you have someone else using your wireless network.

If you go into the management interface on your router (ie: via your web browser) there should somewhere where you can check to see if anybody is connected.

I never thought of that! Yes, my connection is encrypted with a password.

Could someone have taken it out of my computer? I have the full Norton security - not the best choice but I thought it would be effective for low-level internet surfing. Maybe I should switch?
