Can I make my own wireless internet connection? I am asking because I want to get rid of my landline telephone and still get access to internet. Can someone tell me what equipment is needed and approximate cost? I want to make my own access. In my seaside town there is only one very weak and nonsecure wireless network signal. I would not be able to access internet from that one. Can I create my own?

You can purchase wireless Hubs from technology/computer stores. It connects your ISP's connection to the hub and re-transmits in the form of a wireless signal which can be picked up by your computer/laptop providing it has a wireless recieving device (some newer laptops already have that capability).

As for approxomate cost... BT Home Hub is the best one to buy, I have one myself.

Your costs will be for =

Bt Home Hub itself = FREE with some offers.
ISP cost = Not sure, depends what ISP your with, lets say £15/£20 per month?
Wireless device cost = Quite cheap, £10 perhaps less.

A particular offer you may be interested in, you get your home hub, ISP, everything you need to get started and you pay from £15 to £30 a month. depending on what you want (Mcafee network security), unlimited wifi that sort of thing.

Here is the link, I hope it helps! = http://www.broadband.bt.com/ppc/ind...

Be quick, the offer ends 17th March according to this.

You get wireless mobile, like what mobile phones use and comes from the satellites, this is what you mean by "weak signal" i think, you can buy a wireless usb adpater to connect to this signal but you get slow download speeds and a download cap(few gigs a month or so) or you convert you standard phone line(if it is adsl enabled) to tranmsit wireless from the phone socket(well wireless router) by adding a wireless router at the phone socket and either wireless usb adpater or internel wireless pci card to your pc.

So you need

1) BT line with that has ADSL capabilites(about 90% of Britian does i think)
2) An internet package from an ISP
3) A wireless router(most likely get a free one with your internet package)
4) Either a wireless USB adapter or wireless network card for your PC.

So really assuming you get a free wireless router from ISP you need a wireless Network card = £15 and an internet package = £25 setup free and about £15-20 per month for lowest speed.

Oh and if you have a laptop it more than likely already has an internet wireless network card so no need to buy one then.
