i've just recently purchased a d-link dwl-520 wireless pci adapter for one the third computer that will be sharing an internet connection off of a d-link di-514 wireless router. one of the computers is hardwired to the router and the other computer(which is downstairs) has the exact same dwl-520 adapter installed and both are working flawlessly. now, i've installed the adapter into the 3rd computer and set everythink up to the T and for some reason it will only pull a 169.254.x.x ip and 255.255.0.0 subnet. it WILL recognize the SSID and it even connects but won't pull a valid ip. i've even assigned a static ip. witht he static assigned i am able to ping the router which is more than i can do when dhcp is enabled. the only thing different from the working wireless computer that i can see is that instead of saying "assigned by DHCP" for "address type:" in the wireless network connection status, it says "automatic private address". if anyone can shoot me in the right direction i would be one happy camper....i've even had to break down and actually call d-link support to try and resolve this one=\...of course, they're just as dumbfounded as me...thanks a mill!!!!

i think u solved the problem yourself.if the tick box for automatic privtae adress is assigned u will only ever retrieve a 169 PIPA adress and u wnt be able to communicate with your router! u want the tick box for obtain IP address automatically to be ticked.or will want to tick the box where it says obtain via DHCP.as your router is essentially acting as your host server or DHCP.if not u may have a software firewall on your computer that may be blocking your connection.

I had the same problem with that card at first on my Win ME computer. I kept changing bthings back and forth and eventually it worked. I don't remember exactly what it was that made it work though.

There's a D-Link support forum at DSLReports.com that might be helpful.

Also they have a great wireless networking forum with many experienced people.

Ok - I just remembered. When I fist installed the PCI card, the WEP encryption was enabled. When I turned off WEP on the router and the PCI card, it worked.

After re-booting I enabled the WEP again on the router, then on the card, it it's worked fine since then.

Hope that helps.
