I want to connect my desktop(xp home) to my laptop(xp home) without using a crossover ethernet cable. What equpment do I need to do this. It will just be 2 computers so I don't think I'll need a hub or a router or anything like that. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Jamin

So are you saying you want to go wirelss? If that is so you can do it 2 ways. You can either use a wireless card in each device and use an access point and use the devices in "infastructure" mode. Or you can use a wireles card in each device and not use a access point but use the mode "ad-hoc" on the cards. Will you ever be sharing an internet connection?

Hi

I have a posting with a problem of my wireless network between a laptop and a desktop not 'receiving' (I have an 'excellent' signal between them). Please see "wireless network not receiving" 5 March. I would be interested in the comments to this posting as it may help my problem.

Thanks,
catspaws

thanks Ben,

I plan to share whatever internet connection the desktop has, but I'd rather not have to buy an access point. Also, what brands do you recomend buying and do they have to be the same? If I do have to buy the access point, do you know of any that have a dial-up option? I don't have a broadband internet connection, and don't plan on getting one soon.

If you don't have broadband then you have no reason for the AP. They don't have to be the same but if they are you will only have to learn how to configure one type so I would recommend it. I say linksys or netgear. Just make sure you get the same architecture on the cards, ie. 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g
