look at where the router is placed is it near electrics cordless phone? if so move it.
best way to boost a signal is get the router up to the second floor. its best to have it higher than the rest of the equipment.
look at the walls in the direction from the router to the computer are they brick or have pipes in them. if so thats going to degrade signal. see if there is alot of networks in the area if so try changeing on the router to a diffrent band. look at free antena focuser. there diy templates to make and back with tin foil. makes a kind of dish to focus the signal. beware though this is directed at little jimmy and there is some people who think this sort of radiation is bad so focusing at little jimmy aint going to be a great idea. erm and make sure the anteni is pointing up and not jamed next to a wall.

next look at the laptop again is there electrical equipment like cordless phones near it? mobile phones as well. is it on a desk or on little jimmys lap. if its on little jimmys lap not good idea since the wirless card is pumping out radiation and if the signal is week cos jimys laps in the way then the card may bump up the signal. so jimmys laps getting more. as ive said that people think this. may not be the case but best not to take the risk.

thats about it. ive said it before and ill say it again wirless is a pile of poop majour draw security wise and reliability. and its going to get worse as more people get wireless and other devices go wireless.

Thank you.

My hard line is on the first floor, so I have no choice than to keep it there. I don't think bricks and pipes are in the way, but not sure. Is there anyway around it to get better signal? Do I need to buy anything else to get stronger signal?

fildle with the antena see if that helps
if its pointing up put it on its side.
look for the template of the windsurfer.
i know its a home made botch attempt but for the price of a sheet of tin foil and paper its alot cheeper and more efficent than a new antena that will set you back about the same price as your router. could buy a more high powered one but do you really want to be chuking about more radiation than you need to?

and the best way to get 100% signal but defeats the purpose of getting it wireless is run a cable to his laptop.

it might be that wireless isnt suited to you sorry. could be a fridge or aircon or fan or tv thats kicking out alot of noise on rf and killing the signal
