Hey guys,

This is about my brothers computer. Now I'm relaying the info to you guys, I'm very pc literate... so tell me what to do and Ill do it, and Ill explain it as well as I can ...

My brother has windows xp pro. Motorola PCI Wireless Card, and we have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router.

I set everything up, WEP 128bit Encryption. I am hardwired into the router myself, but he is using the wireless. Everything worked for about 3 months, then yesterday, all of a sudden he couldn't connect to the internet...

So I took a look at it, and ran ipconfig /all
and his ip was 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
subnet 255.255.0.0
no gateway

Ive had this problem before on mine, so I did what I did on mine to fix it...

Right click on the network connection, do repair...

Did not work, "failed to renew ip, can't connect to dhcp server"

So i did it from dos, ipconfig /release

Worked... IP 0.0.0.0 Subnet 0.0.0.0

Ipconfig /renew

No luck...

I also release and renewed the ip of the router, because that has helped before... but I've ran out of ideas...

Can you guys help in any way, thanks!!!

Scizzy

I forgot to mention in the first post...

I also tried the netsh ip int reset resetlog.txt

and...

Winsockfix.exe

Both do not fix the problem...

Thanks in advance,
Scizzy

well i ran to this problem before..that ip you gave is just the ip that windows gives when it cant figure out the real ip..what i usually do is reset both my router and my dsl connection and reboot and then it works. if not try to do a system restore to a point where it worked before.

Between yesterday and today something changed so if you can figure out what happened you'll at least have a clue about how to fix it. If he didn't change his TCP/IP settings and is virus-free (check) my guess would be that either the wireless adapter died or lost its programming.

Run an AV scan with an up-to-date scanner and see if he's infected. Run a spyware removal tool, too. Check his TCP/IP settings and make sure he's still set up as a client. From the command prompt ping 127.0.0.1. This is the IP address of the adapter and if you get an OK back the adapter is *probably* good. Check its settings to make sure it's still configured properly.
