Hi everyone.
I have a Netgear DG834G wireless adsl router. However, I so not have an adsl connection, instead i use 56k dial up. I currently share the dial-up connection via windows xp's ICS and a wired ethernet network. I wish to use the DG834G as a wireless access point though, and still use ICS.
I have got the router up and running, all PCs (3) on my network access each other fine (only one is wireless at the moment). However, I cannot get ICS ro work.
Obviously in the past the PC with the dial-up connection would DHCP an address to the other PCs, this allowed the ICS to occur. Now though, it is the router that DHCPs the addresses.
Is it still possible to use ICS with this ADSL modem/router? (Yes I do know that you can purchase waps that are not adsl modems, lol)
Also, an unrelated question. The DG834G modem continually tries to connect to an adsl service - its status is always connecting. Does anybody know a way to stop it searching for a connection, without having an adsl service?

Yes it is possible. The important thing is that the machine you want to enable ICS on has to have the following IP address: 192.169.0.1.
I would statically assign clients their IP address information using 192.168.0.1 as the default gateway and your ISP's DNS server addresses for the DNS addreses.
You could also use the DSL router to DHCP addresses but use the following range: 192.168.0.10 to .50 with 192.168.0.1 as your default gateway address and again, your ISP's DNS server addresses as your DNS.
As to disabling the DSL connection on that router, you'ld have to read in the manual how to do that.

I have tried Curt R's solution and it does not work. The PCs detect my shared dial up connection but cannot access the internet - they do however have full access to the network. Also the status icon in the bottom right (win xp) shows the dial-up connection on the PCs but when there is network traffic the icon does not light up - basically I am saying that the PCs see a shared connection but cannot communicate with it.
Note that Curt R's solution explained setting up ICS - the TCP/IP / DNS settings are identical to my existing settings that work on a normal ethernet switch. This suggests that perhaps the adsl modem of the DG834G is confusing the PCs?
Could somebody suggest a possible reason for all this?
Thankyou.

I managed to get it working.
On the PCs that are sharing the connection the Primary DNS server must be set to the IP address of the PC with the internet connection (ie. 192.168.0.1). Also a DNS suffix must be used on the PCs. The suffix is the workgroup.net. This is just the standard setup that windows uses for ICS, but because the wireless router I am using has an aDSL modem using windows to setup ICS was not working.
Thankyou Curt R.

Hi Cameron,
I'm thinking about buying the same ADSL modem/ WiFi router DG834G v2, and to use it without ADSL - using cable modem which goes through cable TV. (Possibly switching to ADSL in future.)
So I'd like to use DG834 as WiFi router, DHCP server and firewall.
Have you managed the following, please?
- turn off ADSL route search
- use it as router and firewall, while it's not working as ADSL modem? How's your experience so far (a few days)?
They say it can work as router, and that DHCP can be turned off. But they don't mention whether it will then still work as firewall:
