I finally got broadband and a laptop
the laptop, Toshiba Satellite 2675dvd, has 2 32-bit pcmcia slots
and my dsl modem can do wireless b

for file transfers and accessing nonwireless networks, I must have 10/100 wired ethernet on this laptop since it doesnt have a jack built in and I would really like to have wireless
but I dont want to use both of the pcmcia slots and I dont want any dongles

do they make wired and wireless 2-in-1 cards?

and eventhough my modem(Qwest Actiontec) does only wirelss b, will a g card still work with it?

thank you

a b/g card will work with it, not positive about just g (I don't think it does though) as far as wired/ wireless, I don't really know but I kind of doubt it. You are asking for a unique situation. But what's the big deal anyways? your PCMIA cards are easily removed and installed. Another option you can do is; If you have an on board USB card, you can get a wired or wireless USB to ethernet adapter.

We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

ok, ill look for a b/g card in the ads this weekend
that really sucks about the 2-in-1 cuz i really need both and this means carrying around both cards in the laptop bag and paying for both and 2 drivers and...

ok thanks angrymen2001
ps, I hate usb ethernet adapters :( yuck
and i only have one onboard usb 1.1 port for my mouse and or flash drive

Hi Giggles,

You want a 'g' card unless you can get a really good deal on a 'b'. 802.11g if fully backward compatible with 'a'. But 'a' cards are only a fifth of the speed of 'g'.

I think if you could find a combined card, it would probably cost more than the combined cost of one of each. Carrying an extra PC card is a hassle?

I see that after months, you have joined Quest. I guess if they suck, it's not too hard!

usb 1.1 sucks and i need that port for other stuff
and i just checked the spec on my modem and it says itll do g so im gonna pick up a netgear card at comp usa tommorrow for $10 after rebates
when i set things up right, small file tranfers wont be too bad with wireless

I got the netgear card and it will do g at as far of range as i need
file transfers are berable since yesterday I sent over a 700mb movie in 10minutes

definitely good enough to use instead of a wired card except that, in win98, it takes a real hassle to get connected
ill try updating the driver and firmware, see if that helps
