Hi all,

Sorry if this is a dumb question.....

I currently have a Netgear DG834 wired router with two PC's connected via ethernet to it. I would like to use the Netgear MP101 wireless mp3 player on my wired network could anyone please tell me how I can make my wired network accessable for wireless peripherals?

I have read up on the web and a "wireless access point" (e.g. Netgear ME103) seems like what I need ~ if I connect it to the DG834 via ethernet?

I could do with some advice as if a wireless access point is the way to go do I choose Netgear's ME103 or Linksys's wireless G or another type???

Thanks in advance any help would be appreciated.

Ribs

Have you considered just replacing the wired router with a wireless router with 4 wired ports? Should solve your problem and be one less potential trouble spot.

Hi Clyde,

Thanks for your reply, I had considered this but the whole point of originally getting a wired router was because the PC's are literally next to the router. Also if I replace the router with say the Netgear DG wireless one I also need to replace the two cards in the existing PC's.

Do you think adding the access point may cause additional config problems? I was hoping Netgear stuff would talk to Netgear stuff with ease or am I being dumb?! haha

I hoped that other DG834 (or equivalent) users were in the same boat and there is an easy solution to be honest but it appears from my net search I am the only one, hence I thought I’d ask here.

cheers,
Ribs

Access Points cost as much or more than a 4 port wireless router. You do not have to change the internal NICS on your PCs when you buy the new wireless router. They should work fine just by connecting your patch cords. You could also connect the wireless router to your current router by changing some internal settings like turning off DHCP on the new router, and maybe a crossover cable if the ports don't auto detect. Just like adding a hub.

Good Luck.
