WinXP slow saving to Network Drives

We have 4 XP pro PCs with a win2k server. Using file explorer I can read & write at good speeds to mapped network drives. When using applications such as VB6 or Word saving a file to a network drive takes an age. We use TCPIP protocol with no firewall
