Comment:
I recently set a PC to act as a DHCP server and it sets the DNS and WINS to the same address.
I would like to add to that PC A WINS server, is there a program to do it in Win XP, is it necesary ? I already have DNS running from the DSL Router.

Depends, some older programs might need workgroup names. For the most part in XP you wouldn't need a wins server if your systems are normally powered up and online for some time. http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorial...
Some odd issues occur in larger workgroups all on layer 2 switches or across t-1 or mixed media.
There would be good reasons to use a wins server but for home use I'd guess it unlikely.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.
Summary: What exactly does a WINS server do? I use a win98 box with a modem to connect my home network to the internet and provide dhcp. the 98 and xp computers can ping each other fine, but they won't share...
