Any of you a "wins expert". I have a scenario I needed some help with on my
home network.

Here's a quick rundown (all servers running windows2k server)

There are four domains:

Domain a replicates wins with b and c.

Domain b replicates wins with a and c

Domain c replicates wins with a and b

(so basically its a triangle with bidirectional action between each domain with bi-directional trusts as well)

This works fine, but here's the wrench.

Domain c replicates wins with domain d

Domain d replicates wins with domain c

(so d does not directly have anything to do with a or b)

So... Here's the scenario, once the c-d replication takes place, when it's
time for the a-b-c replication, a and b are picking up the entries from d
since c has them.

So, even tho a and b have nothing to do with d (networks aren't even
connected) if I go to network neighborhood on domain a or b, bam, there's d.
Of course I can't get to them, but still.

Same thing is happening on domain d. They can see a and b, since c had
those entries as well.

My question is... Is there any way to block the replication between a-b-c
and c-d?

Thanks for any advice!!!

From what I'm seeing I have come to the conclusion you're used to NT and are new to 2000. With 2000 you could have all those 4 separate forests set up as a single domain...or a domain with child domains inside one forest. A setup like this would simply every aspect of management and security of your domains.

To be totally honest, your present setup makes no sense considering the network operating system you're using.

The second big point is this...in an Active Directory enabled 2000 domain with all 2000 servers, you can run in Native Mode and with 2000's DDNS, you don't even require WINS as DNS will do all the resolution for you.

Wow. To follow up what Curt is saying - Why are you even running WINS at all? Unless you have some application that needs it, don't use it. As Curt says, DNS has taken the place of WINS in Windows 2000 and just complicates things as your question perfectly illustrates.

I also agree that this could probably be one domain and your network would be extremely simplified and most of your problems may be eliminated.
