Hello, I have a question about network running winNT OS. Currently im a student on a campus with about 1500 students. Our network has 2 T1 lines, 1 for computer labs/teachers and such and the other t1 for the students dorm rooms. Currently our netowk admin has put whats called a "packet shaper" onto the student t1 line. This restricts us from doing things such as: download at high speeds/Gaming..ect....My question is..Is there any way that i can bypass the packet filter and use one of the computer lab computers as sorta like a gateway to the internet without going through the packet filter? I know its bending the rules, but i would like to use the internet with unlimited bandwidth, any ideas would greatly help, thanks.
John

There is! (I think)

If the packet fitter is not running on the proxy server, you can use tunneling over ip.
There are software packages how can do that.
(Search www.download.com for tunneling)

Maybe it will help you.

No. Tunneling won't work as the tunneling protocols are also nixed. Give it up.
The "shaper" lists what is allowed. If it isn't listed, it won't work.

There isnt any way, a Packet shaper is an inline device between the LAN and the internet router. It filters and applies policies to all traffic at application level. The only way round is if the admin has left something open....or to physically bypass the connection from the packet shaper to the router in the datacentre - both of which are very unlikely.

In addition, trying to bypass the packet shaper which is there to ensure quality of service to all users is probably against the Acceptable Use Policy for your internet access - a little bit more than bending the rules. Depending how nasty the sysadmin is feeling they could do almost anything from pulling your internet access to denying you any access to computing services at all...they tend to take a very dim view of this sort of thing
