I have a Windows XP computer at home that is connected to the Internet via a router/cable modem. I also have a laptop (windows XP pro) which I take with me. I have the built in VPN server running on the computer at my house, and I can connect to it from my laptop from anywhere I have an Internet connection. What traffic is routed through the VPN connection? If I visit a website on my laptop, will the website see my IP address as that of my home computer? If I run bittorrent on my laptop, will all the traffic first be routed through my home cable connection?

Your ip as seen from the internet is always the first router you are behind. If using a hotels web access it will be their routers wan interface ip. If vpning it would be your home routers wan interface ip.
If your vpn is engaged yes all traffic will be routed via your home network. Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search
