windows xp does not seem to see the router. I can't connect to it using the web browser or ping it either. its a d-link DI-604 router. It works fine on my other xp machine and I can ping it and connect to it from linux too.
dont know why it just refuses to work in a second xp machine. I tried ipconfig/release and renew with no effect, and unplugging the router and then plugging it back in doesnt work either. the d-link manual says nothing about it. I would appreciate any help I can get to resolve this.

Also, what info does it give you when you release and renew your ip? Is it a 192 address, 0's, or something like a 169 address? If it is renewing an IP for you, then you should have a good connection and I would check your firewall in case you DLed SP2

Check your firewall settings. The XP firewall should be set to "Connect to the Internet through a router" or whatever the verbage is on the firewall setup menu, if you're using a 3rd party firewall make sure it knows that IP range 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.255.255 is "local" or "trusted".

when I renew the ip windows xp gives me an automatically assigned address beginning with 169. it doesnt have any updates though, not even sp1 because I cant get on the net with it to download anything. It has symantec personal firewall but my other comp also has it and it can connect to the internet through the router just fine. I may try and check my firewall settings. thanks
