Can I setup XP or W2K to be a hardware router? I also have a copy of W2K server (not advanced server, just server) incase that would work. Thanks,

Afternoon all,

In short the answer to your question is yes!

Windows XP Pro can act as a Router however there is no GUI to do this.

You require to put entries into your LAT for the remote networks (routing table) *let me know if you need more info on how to do this* and edit the following regestry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

Set "IPEnableRouter" from the default value of 0 to 1.

This enables IP Routing on the machine, simply go ahead and connect to the newly configured router.

Good luck!

are you sure you want to do this??? because windows has to listen to the packet before it can drop it. that means the bad info has to touch your machine before it can block it. thats no good at all. you are definatly askin for a head ache here. go with a linksys or dlink, they're cheap. if its just an internet connection your sharing then ICS is the way to go if its just a couple PC's.
good luck

Hi AJ,

With all due respect he hasn't said whether he wants to use this as a router to connect to the internet.

He may well have a 192.168.x.x network and a 10.0.0.x network he may want to route between.

There was no note of internet connection sharing requirement in the original incident logged - however you are right with the point you have made, there are plenty firewalls available to put on the winXP router though!

All the best.
