Greetings,

I have found tons of dead-ends on this subject, but little to rectify my problem.

I am trying to add a Windows 98 SE machine to my current windows XP network. Thus far, I have configured TCP/IP, NetBIEU, and even gone as far as to add IPX/SPX, to no avail. I have played with settings, run the XP Network Setup Disk on my 98 machine, and tried virtually everything else I can think of, and yet, nothing.

Right now, I can 'see' my windows 98 machine from both XP boxes, however, I can't access it. When I attempt to browse my local network from my windows 98 box, I get nothing. I can go as deep as my domain, which I affectiontely called MXHOME, but beyond that, it can't see the network.

I can access my NETGEAR Printserver/Router without a problem, but cannot ping my other machines without timeouts. I am able to access the internet without a problem, just can't see other machines.

This system is a Sony VIAO 333 Celeron at 128MB, it doesn't have a CDRom, and I hope to share one from my other two desktop machines to install some much needed software.

Any help you can provide would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! :)

Warmest Regards,

Kel

I have run into problems with Win98 networking, when too much fiddleing has been done. its not as forgiving as the later OS's.

however, on your win98 machine, go to RUN then type COMMAND. (you'll get a dos window),
type IPCONFIG. you should get something like the following
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.5
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

then go to each of your XP machines and to the same EXCEPT instead of typing COMMAND type CMD.
the IP addresses on all 3 machines should be fairly close to each other ALL HAVING THE SAME "SUBNET MASK" and "GATEWAY". the gateway will be your netgear router.
then go to one of your XP machines, open windows explorer, right clink on the cd and chose sharing. keep in mind, that in order to access it you will also need to supply a password!..... If you setup your win98 machine to logon with name & password, add that name & password as a user in the xp machine, gets rid of the prompt each time you try to access it....

As for the services, all you really need for the network is TCP/IP. the others are unnecessary.

Forgot, in the networking properties, where you have TCP/IP, and added the NetBIEU & ect,
be sure you have
"File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks".

on the 98se machine remove the netbieu protocol its not needed and install ipx/spx protocol then go to ipx/spx protocol properties select the netbios tag and check the enable netbios over ipx/spx checkbox then reboot. given that you have all file and printer sharing activated on all machines and have folders shared on all machines and same network name on all machines this will work. the xp machines should have the out of the box settings from when xp was installed ie default but if you have made changes on the xp machine(s) then ensure the followjng protocols are ticked, in the network props 1 file and print share for msoft networks 2 n w link for netbios 3 network monitor driver 4 nw link ipx/spx transfer protocol 5 internet protocol
regards and happy networking

terry
