I just put a ethernet card in my comp and installed the drivers and plugged into my schools network, but my computer is not recognizing the internet connection. There are no logins or anything, all my roommates are able to just plug in and go, Ive been toying with it for the past few days, uninstalling and re-installing, trying to configure, and so far Ive gotten it to work once, but thats it. Since then it hasnt worked and I have no Idea why not. Everything seems to be setup properly, all the drivers are installed, I have client for microsoft networks and TCP/IP and IPX protocols. It just doesnt want to work, its connected it just refuses to recognize the connection. Ive also tried removing all dial-ups and putting the LAN settings on auto-detect........can anyone help me?

thanks
Tarbosh

Can you see other computers on the network, and/or can they see you; even if you're settings are wrong to connect to the internet, you'll often still appear on the LAN? If you're not appearing on the network check your network cable; if your card has a light on the back of it, it should illuminate when you've conected to the network (with my 98, switching the wires required rebooting in order for my system to recognize the change).

If you're connecting/appearing on the network, then concern yourself with your network settings.

If its a Winsock Problem these have worked on my systems before.

This file is a repost of a post that helped me. I can no longer find it to point you there...so here's a copy of it as is...fixed 2 PCs I had with this problem and you don't have to do any registry editing...thanks Tony

Here's my Winsock fix for Win 98 and ME. It's simple, it has been tested many times, and it does the trick:

Open Control Panel. Go to the Add and Remove programs/windows setup tab. Take the check mark out of Communication, and click 'apply'. When asked to reboot, say no.

Now copy the two bold lines to Notepad, and save as Dialup.reg (save as 'all files')
Doubleclick your new Dialup.reg file, and answer 'yes' to the prompt whether you'd like the contents of Dialup.reg added to the Registry.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2]

Go back to the Add and Remove programs/windows setup tab, put the check mark back at 'Communication', and click OK again. You'll probably need your Windows CD-ROM.

This file has worked for Win XP

I have to assume that you had a working system and this is not a new install and that only one PC went down and you can get on the Internet with the other one.

1)Download this file from here...

http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe

(the source is from our good friends at...
http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm...the page it's on)

2)On the computer that has no internet access; Force a valid network address like the usual...Specify an IP address...192.168.0.X and a mask if you need it 255.255.255.0 and get the intranet working and copy that file WinsockXPFix.exe (1.3Mb and fits a floppy) over and execute it on the PC. It should fix your problem it even puts it back to...Obtain an IP address automatically.

From the source it says:
Winsock repair utilities written by others

I want to add that it should be in everyones first aid kit...just imagine if you only had one PC in the house!
