I can ping the other pcs from the win 2000 pc and if i go start\run\and type ip address here i can connect to other pcs.(i cant connect if i type the computers name.

Is the Windows 2000 firewall turned on?

John.... I cant connect to the pc running win 2000 nor can i ping it from any of the other pcs. The fact that he can't ping other machines from the Win2k machine suggests that the Win2k machine is on a different IP subnet.

Norman,

Check your IP settings on that Win2k box. Take this example:

Let's say your XP machines are 192.168.100.2, 192.168.100.3, 192.168.100.4. Then, let's suppose all have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (or /24). This makes their network address 192.168.100.0. If the Win2k machine is not within 192.168.100.1-192.168.100.255, you won't be able to communicate with it.

In the example above, 192.168.100.2 can speak with 192.168.100.3. However, 192.168.100.2 will not be able to talk to 192.168.10.5
