I have an old PC running Windows 98, and a laptop running windows XP. I have tons of data I want off the PC, so I want to set up a network. I have A NIC card in the PC, and a USB->Ethernet adapter on the laptop. I got a crossover cable, and ran the "set up a home network" wizard on XP. It said both computers successfully completed, and the PC sees itself on the "Network Neighborhood" and the laptop sees itself on the "MY Network Places." Problem: They don't see each other!!! Any idea of how to change this???

When I ran 98 and xp I simply could not get each of the comps to see each other UNTIL!! I installed the NETBEUI protocol on win xp

Of course that is in the extra's folder in the win xp pro disk Unsure if xp Home has that ,,,,, for Me .. netbeui made networking the two so much easier... Forget though whether the ntfs format is a problem with Fat file format in netbeui or not though .... Someone else may have to chime in and help you out....

MSI 845e mb 768 mb am and a p4 2.4n running xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

Install NetBEUI on Windows XP
The files that you need for installing the NetBEUI protocol on Windows XP are Netnbf.inf and Nbf.sys. To install NetBEUI, follow these steps:
Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive and then locate the Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder.
Copy the Nbf.sys file to the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers folder.
Copy the Netnbf.inf file to the %SYSTEMROOT%\Inf hidden folder.

Note To make a hidden folder viewable, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type Explorer, and then click OK.
Click Tools, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, click to select Show hidden files and folders under the Hidden files and folders Folder.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click Install.
Click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click to select NetBEUI Protocol from the list and then click OK.
Restart your computer if you are prompted to do this.
The NetBEUI protocol is now installed and working.

Note %SYSTEMROOT% is a Windows environment variable that identifies the folder where Windows XP is installed. (Typically, that folder is C:\Windows.) To view the value that is associated with %SYSTEMROOT%, type set at a command prompt, and then press ENTER. (Other environment values will also be displayed.)

Note After following the steps that are listed earlier in this article, you can use NetBEUI on LAN connections. However, you will not be able to use NetBEUI on a remote access connection. Remote access connections cannot use NetBeui.

NETBEUI isn't installed under XP anymore because it really isn't necessary and doesn't work across a routed network anyway (only direct cable connection). Most older applications will run under IPX/SPX, which does work across a router (not the case here, though), just as well as NETBEUI. All modern applications should work with TCP/IP. As a rule you should only install the protocols you really need on each client and bind NETBIOS to the one you want to use.

WinXP automatically installs a firewall during setup so you may have to disable this for the PCs to work together. However it really sounds like what you need to do is enable File Sharing on the desktop and go to each resource folder you want to copy over and enable Sharing. Then the laptop should be able to "see" the shared resource in Network Neighborhood and you'll be able to copy your folders/files over.
