I bought a new HP laptop w/ Vista. Trying to get the network running.
Also, have a Win98,SP2 (1GHz,256Mb) desktop with a shared printer connected, hard wired to a D-Link DI614+ wireless router which also connects to an ADSL internet modem.
Have an Win/ME (ver 4.90.3000, PIII processor,128MB,700mHz) laptop with a D-Link DWL-650+ wireless net card.
All the computers can access the internet.
The two laptops can see each other as a file sharing resource. Neither can see the desktop and the desktop can see neither of the laptops for file share. The Win/ME lap and the desk used to file share, but I haven't used the feature in a while, so have no idea when they stopped.
I can ping any computer from any other computer successfully.
The Win/ME lap can still access the printer over the network, although the printer doesn't show up as a network resource.
The desktop and the Win/ME lap can talk to each other over the network using PCAnywhere.
I just can't get file sharing and printer sharing to work. I think something is bonkers on the desktop, but what?
If tried shutting off all the firewall programs, no help. The Desk network settings fir the network card are:
Client for Microsoft;Windows logon;File and printer sharing for MS networks;Get IP auto;No WINS;No gateway;Disable DNS;Client and File share bindingsI remove and reinstalled the network resources on the desktop, no help.
The Vista Lap Sharing and Discovery setting are: Discovery:ON,File Share:ON, Public Share: ON, Printer Share:ON, home network is a private network. All the computers use the same Win98 default network name:WORKGROUP
Any suggestions where I can go from here to get the file shares to work on this mess?
Thanks,
Jaye

Jennifer,
Thanks. I'll look into it.
A couple of days ago the Win98 desktop crashed. When I went to reboot it came up with a Windows Protection fault and wouldn't boot except in Safe Mode. When it booted in Safe, there was a message about something may be wrong with the network, and I removed all the network components from the Computer, and disabled all the network card's drivers.
I rebooted in regular mode. It came up OK. I reinstalled the network components, etc. Now the network all runs OK and I got my file and printer sharing to work.
I don't know what was wrong, but it seems to be OK now. I hate magic wand fixes, but who knows.
Jaye
