( I already wrote that message I just want people to reply it )
I have a win98 pc and a winXP pc , now , both computers are connected to each other and when I try to establish a LAN connection from WinXP to win98 there are no problems and the connection works , the problem is that both computers can't see each other and also can't ping each other , they can ping them selves though , please help , ( just don't give me links or something :) )
here are the network tcp/ip settings:
Win98 :
ip : 192.168.0.2
subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
gateway none
wins : disabled
bindings : client for microsoft networks , file and print sharing.
DNS : disabled
WinXP :
ip : 192.68.0.1
subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
gateway none
wins : disabled :
bindings : file and print sharing , client for microsoft networks
DNS : disabled

When you mean , they can't see each others. Do you imply that they can not map each other drives or just the network neighborhood?
If you can ping, that is a good sign. Okay, here is what you may want to check or do.
1. Check the workgroup name, see if they have the same group name
2. You have to share the drive or folders for other pc to seelet me know if there is futher problem.

Was that a typo or is your xp address really
192.68.0.1 cuz if it is you need to change it to 192.168.0.1

the addresses are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
and the workgroup is the same , and what i said is that Win98 can ping it self and Winxp can ping it self but win98 can't ping XP and XP can't ping 98 . any help ?

Is the connection on your XP box firewalled?
I had a similar problem and when I turned the firewall in XP off, it worked fine.

hey i have the same problem as Xen, the only diference is that i can ping 98 with xp and vice versa. but they cant see each othe in the network neighberhood.
xp ip--> 169.254.252.44
subnet mask 255.255.0.098 ip--> 169.254.252.43
subnet mask 255.255.0.0what am i doing wrong???

Xen,
If your machine can't ping each other with those network settings, then it's high probability its a cable or hub/switch problem. Verify your cables, and if they are directly connected togehter, then yes, make sure it is a crossover cable. Don't beat your head in on any other service besides TCPIP seetings and cabling until they can ping each other.Manuel,
First, remember a computer has to actually be broadcasting a share before it will show up in browsing services (ie; Network Places). Make sure each machine is actually sharing some folder or printer before trying to browse for it. Second, in XP's network properties, somewhere in there is a setting to enable NetBIOS over TCPIP (I think in the WINS tab). Try enabling it. I ran into that into another guys house, and never got it working until I had cause to reinstall the WIN98 machine, and low and behold it starting working. I hope you have better luck than I did.

analyst.
i have the HD of each computer shared...
and i activated the netbios but i still cant see the shared drives in the network neighberhood :(

i dont know what i did but now i can see the xp shared drive in 98, but i cant see the 98 shared drive in xp :(
Problems,Problems when will they end!

Manuel,
Microsoft probably isnt making this easy because they rather you bought XP for both machines and make more money. With that said, on the XP machine, click on [Start], then [Run], and in the Open field type \\(the other computers name or ip address)
For example:
\\Computer1
or
\\169.254.252.43
This is a direct way of browsing share on another computer, without having to rely on "My Network Places" finding computers for you.

analyst.
i tried what u said but it said that it couldnt reach the network location :(
and what mainly tcks me off is that i can transfer data from my xp to 98 but not vice versa... ahhhhh >:(y did microsoft made this xp thing!!! xp is picky about things jajaja
