Is it possible to successfully install a wireless network card into a win98 machine? (not se edition)

The pc is too slow for xp upgrade..amd 500 with 128 megs ram (& no USB ports)

The card is an Edimax ieee 802.11g wireless card.

I installed the card/latest drivers, then when I booted up I got an error concerning iphlpapi.dll (or exe). I downloaded a later version which cured that prob...now when the pc loads up..the cards icon will appear in the tray then it will turn black & say it's not connected or installed..(can't remember which). In system properties for the card I think it roughly said ndis.vxd & nkern.vxd could not load the drivers..(think those were the names).

Should I give up with 98 or is there a simple solution? Cheers for any info..Andy.

It's probably time to upgrade both hardware and software. If you wanted to rebuild that machine, you could buy a bundled package from tigerdirect. That would include a motherboard, CPU, memory and would probably want a bigger HD. Of course, you would have to look for an installation CD of w2k Pro or XP Pro.
If not, look around for another machine.

You don't say what model card you have but I suspect you need 98se at least. Most of the Edimax cards I found listed it as a requirement.

You may be able to find a copy of the win98se upgrade cd around, Ebay maybe.

You'd need se for USB as well.

Good luck

"You'd need se for USB as well."

You may be thinking of Win95 - 98FE supports USB - although the OP doesn't actually have USB ports, which makes me wonder what prompted that.

At any rate, the card's system requirements appear to be 98SE and up (consider that a hint from the manufacturer)

If I know the answer I'll tell you the answer, and if I don't, I'll just respond, cleverly

Yep..seems I should have paid closer attention to windows requirements.

Agree an upgrade is the better bet.seeing as it's so my kid can play networked games with me.(It's only shoved in my sons bedroom after I upgraded the main pc...just gonna sting a little upgrading a second time)Joys of advancing technology!

Cheers for the posts all..appreciated..(another pc build..ouch)
