Win98 in WinNT Domain, couldn't connect

Hi, everybody, I'm having trouble putting one of our Win98 machines into a Windows NT domain. The server is on the second floor, while the machine is going to be on the first. I tried connecting the machine on the second floor, it worked. I could log on and do everything. But when I put it downstairs, it started having problems, while all the other windows and dos machines worked just fine. It's either extremely slow as well as very unstable, or no connection at all. I'm scratching my hair off again. Please help me! Could it be the cable? Thank you for your time!

Do you have network drives mapped on the Win 98 box? If so, you would have to either disable it or setup the WinNT server as a WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service) server and set the WINS address in the Win98 machine to that of the WinNT server.

You don't say how the Win98 PC is connected once it is moved downstairs. Is it via Cat5 UTP? Are there any hubs/switches in the path that aren't there when it is upstairs. Cat5 UTP can go a max 100metres so that could be a problem or it could be bad connections on the end of the cable. For 100mbps connections 4 pairs are needed, it could be a bad connection on one wire somewhere. If it is a straight cable connection I would check the connectors at both ends are 100% OK or you will have probs.

thank you for responding..^_^ there is a switch downstairs. we also have 3 Dos machines and 4 windows machines down there work just fine. i can plug that troublesome machine to any of those connectors those machines use and it works just fine. Yeah, my focus is on that piece of cable now, but just can't get it right. it looks alright with cable tester, but no machine can connect to the network through it.

Are you sure that theres not a router between floors, check the gateway addresses of the machines downstairs to see if they do point to a router, also check that theres not 2 subnets configured for upstairs & downstairs and the 98 machine is stillnot configured with an ip config for the upstairs network. Can you ping any of the machines upstairs by name or IP?
