Hi. I'm a newbie so sorry for my long message. Hope you can help me.

I'm trying to establish a network with my pc (win98) and my brother's (win95). I've got my ethernet cards installed and according to the device manager in both pcs the network adapters are working correctly. I've got my clients, protocols, and adapters installed.

My problems are:

* On the win98 pc:
1. The green LED on the ethernet card is not on.
2. I can't see the networking log on window at start up.
3. I can't see any pc in the local network, and I get an error message that says that I have no access to a network.

On the win95 pc:
1. I can't see the win 98 pc in the local network, I can only see and explore the win95 shared folders.

What should I do?

Thanks for the help!

If the link light is not on on the nic, you have no connection at all. This could be a cable problem or a nic problem First, check your router and see if it notices the cable; if it does the problem may be with your nic. To narrow it down, ping your nic card by running a cmd.exe window and ping 127.0.0.1. Then, assuming that works (if it doesn't its your card or tcp/ip isn't installed), do ipconfig. Your ip address should not start with a 169.254, if it does, it is a problem with your dhcp server, or firewall. But I am sure you won't get that far, because if your link light is not on, it is a problem with your nic or cable.

wown.com (as already offered above by x86) - basics upwards LAN tutorials; should help you to get it all going.

A couple of itmes to be aware of - though they may not be the issues here.

If using PCI based NICs, ensure that neither NIC is installed in the PCI slot immediately adjacent (next) to the agp slot - if the agp slot is in use... The two slots share the same irq, and the NIC just won't work properly (if at all) if sharing the irq with the agp card. Install NIC at lesat one slot apart from the agp slot (if using the agp slot).

Ensure also you have either netbeui installed to both OS, or tcp/ip... '95 installs netbeui by default; '98 installs tcp/ip. You can have both installed if so wished... To share isp (via ICS in '98) you do need tcp/ip in both OS; if not sharing isp then netbeui alone is more than adequate.

Ensure the NIC is securely seated in each case; ensure you have the drivers loaded correctly.

Items to verify initially within each OS:
you have enabled file/print sharing; client for M$ networks.

Prasmin: Yes I've done the IP settings correctly.

Dan: Thanks, I'll do what you said. Hope it works! Although I think I'll probably have to buy another NIC.

trvlr: Thanks, I did put the NIC on slot apart from the agp slot. I do have both TCP/IP and NETBEUI on both pc's and I do have enabled file/print sharing; client for M$ networks. So I'm thinking it's the NIC.
