I am trying to network 2 pcs 1 windows 98se and the other windows xp pro, so that I can share a internet connection via the xp machine. I am using a crossover cable. I am having BIG problems! I can see the win 98 machine on xp, but not the other way round. On the xp machine
it won’t let me access the win 98 machine; it comes up with the error

"\\win98 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found. "

I can't ping in either direction. The list below details settings I have used for both machines!

Xp firewall has been disabled.
Both machines have the same workgroup.
Both machines have different names.
Xp has users account exactly the same as the windows 98 pc.
File and print sharing has been enabled on both machines.
TCP/IP has been installed on both pc’s and I have given ip address 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for server/client respectively.
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 for both.
Gateway is 192.168.0.1 on both.
On xp I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
I have shared a directory on both machines.

Protocols on xp machine are:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and printer sharing
Qos Packet Scheduler
NWlink NetBIOS
NWlink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Trans
NetBeui
TCP/IP

Protocols on 98 machines are:
Client for Microsoft Networks
IPX/SPX/ Compatible
NetBeui -> Dial Up adapter
NetBeui -> NE2000 Compatible
NetBIOS Support for IPX/SPX Compatible Prot
TCP/IP -> NE2000 Compatible
File and printer sharing

All Protocols are bound to all components
I have tried the step-by-step guide on www.wown.com and www.homenethelp.com to no avail.

I have read many existing posts all who seem to be having similar problems with XP and I have tried most of the fixes that haves been suggested.

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME!!

Thanks

I'd say try removing NWlink NetBIOS &
NWlink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Trans on xp and removing IPX/SPX/ Compatible & NetBIOS Support for IPX/SPX Compatible Prot
on 98.

also to use internet sharing on the xp machine all the client computers need to be setup to obtain ip address's automaticaly to receive dhcp I think. xp will automatically set it's address as 192.168.0.1

you can probably remove netbeui also but it would need to be removed on both machines. i would only leave it on if you would plan on adding win95 or 3.1 to workgroup.

Do the following steps on WinXp machine:

-Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Local Security/User Rights Assignment
-Remove Guest from "Deny access to this computer from the network"
-Be sure that Everyone is in "Acces this computer from the network"

After this you should be able to browse the other computer's sharings.
Bye

Hi, thanks for all the suggestions!

Sorry for not replying for a while. I have been on holiday and have not really had time to try and get win 98 machine working. I have seen similar problems to mine of other forums, and someone suggested that my 'crossover cable' is not supported on win 98. My cable is "RJ45"Can you please tell me if this is true! If so do you think the cable will be supported on windows 2000?

Thanks
