I am just trying to add a client machine to my domain - it is the first computer to join the domain.
I name it in the wizard, attempt to join, the client finds the domain controller then says "The computer name cannot be changed: The specified server is unable to carry out this task"... or something along those lines. Also, in this process, I am informed "An account for this computer cannot be found". I have tried creating the account in ADS first - no avail at all!

Well what do you have here? A 2k box with Active directory? And XP trying to join a domain? Well you have to add the user accounts into AD first. Domain name is old business. You are doing client server and no domains.
