How are you getting the broadband connection into one of the computers?
The best way to do it would be to get a broadband router, this way if the second computer is not in use, it can be turned off.

Yes, you can do it. Yu need to either connect the modem to one of the computers via USB (if the modem has it), or get a second NIC for the computer that hte modem will attach to. You will then need to set up ICS on the host computer.
But, I agree with HondaBear - the best thing would be to get a router.
