My boyfriend has dial-up internet service and an email account with PeoplePC. I have broadband DSL service with AT&T. I recently upgraded my modem and router to their Uverse modem. What we would like to know is this... If we buy him a wireless ethernet card to connect his PC to my router, presumably making his PC run at faster speeds, will he need to switch his ISP to AT&T and give up his PeoplePC email address? Would his OS (Windows XP) need to be the same as mine (Windows 7)?

You can't use a single router for two different ISP accounts, and if your router was supplied to you by AT&T it most likely won't work with another ISP anyhow.

However, there is nothing to stop your boyfriend from connecting his PC to your router for internet access using your ISP account.

No he wouldn't need to switch his ISP. If he connects to your router he will be using your ISP. There is no restriction imposed by the ISP on how many people can use a single DSL connection. He can keep the PeoplePC account if he wishes but it will be totally separate from your DSL account.

As for the email address, if it is one supplied by PeoplePC then he will lose it if he closes the account. If it is one of the public Email providers like Google, Yahoo or Microsoft then he can use that through your ISP as he did before.

The Operating system is irrelevant in this instance. Window 98, XP,Vista, 7 and 8 will all work together on the same network.

Is he paying for PeoplePC? Is he going to continue using dial-up at times?

When connected to your ISP via the wireless card, all he has to do is open his browser (IE, Chrome, Firefox, etc) & surf the internet. If he wants to check his PeoplePC mail, all he has to do is logon here:
