I'm not up on my wifi technology so if I'm unclear about what's going on please ask and I'll try to elaborate.

My son has a:
Compaq Presario V6000 laptop
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

At home, we have a Linksys WRT54G router and he has no problems connecting.

At college, they have a NetGear router and when it was first installed he had no problems connecting, but, recently he will attempt to connect to the router and it will appear to connect for a split second and then he gets booted off. He tried the “repair” feature but it will only hang with the messages:
“Waiting for Network to be ready” or “Acquiring a network address”.

His roommate has had no problems and can connect to the router with no problems.

Any help appreciated.

Mike

Do they have any security set up on the router? Did they ever? Maybe his roommate played a trick on him and changed the security settings?

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

I doubt it.
The room mate is even less tech. inclined then my son. :-)

They did have to enter a password when the NetGear was set up if that's what you mean by
"Do they have any security set up on the router?"

Routers go bad after awhile. He might try d/ling the latest firmware from Netgear's website and installing it - jot down the settings first; he'll lose all of these in the reset.

If that doesn't work go buy a new one.

I'll see if there is any firmware updates for the NetGear but I don't think it's the router that is causing the problems, as the room mate has no problem getting connected.

I think it may be my sons laptop that is somehow screwed up.

Any pointers in that direction?

Mike
